These are challenging times to find a meaningful vocation. Most work is driven by profit and a demand for productivity. Metrics are constantly being invented to measure us, dominating even areas where there was traditionally greater leisure and space to be creative. Daily lives are coming under pressures of all sorts.
Krishnamurti suggested that schools could be an oasis “where one can learn a way of living that is whole, sane, and intelligent.” A vocation where learning is at the heart of daily work, learning about the outer as well as the inner: this could be a creative response to the state of the world. School teaching is a challenging and meaningful vocation, one that continually pushes us to see the world and ourselves anew, and we want to share this message with people who are considering teaching as a profession!
Can we create spaces where such conversation can take place, where we can express our thoughts in a spirit of dialogue rather than argumentation? Such spaces are much needed today.
To this end, we are running a seminar every few months called Why Teach? It is a two day residential seminar, and we welcome anyone who is curious about Krishnamurti’s educational vision, and would like to understand how it can be expressed in a school setting, to join. We will share fundamental questions arising from Krishnamurti’s philosophy of education and living, and invite you to join in the dialogue.
Our first Why Teach? seminar took place in December 2025, with twelve participants from several places in India. CFL teachers and two others from sister schools held sessions on how and why we believe that education can be a response to the challenges facing human beings and our planet. The long, participatory dialogue sessions energized us all. It was lovely to get to know each others’ thoughts and questions, and carry these from the weekend back to our homes and workplaces.
Our second Why Teach? seminar is scheduled for April 24-26, 2026. There is no fee.
