			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A distinction many people draw in the field of learning is between “academic” and “non-academic” pursuits. In our past brochures and publications, we too have made such a distinction. It seems to be based on a simple classification scheme: subjects (such as history, math, language and science) are academic, and extra-curricular activities (such as carpentry, pottery, music and art) are non-academic. Following from this are some interesting frameworks: academic means verbal, linear, intellectual, rational and analytical, whereas non-academic pursuits are non-verbal, lateral, creative and spontaneous, allowing for emotional expression. These distinctions are often justified as the “left brain right brain divide”. Why the need for this division?</p>
